X. Benedictus, Giovanni olarak doğdu, 5 Nisan 1058'de IX. Stephanus'un halefi olarak seçildi, ancak II. Nicholaus'u seçen rakip bir hizip buna karşı çıktı. 24 Ocak 1059'da Roma'dan kaçtı ve bugün genellikle bir antipapa olarak kabul edilir.
O zamanlar bölgedeki baskın siyasi hanedanın bir üyesi olan Tusculum Kontu III. Alberico'nun en küçük oğlu olan Poli Lordu Guido'nun oğluydu. Giovanni, 1048'de tahttan indirilen kötü şöhretli Papa IX. Benedictus'un yeğeniydi. X. Benedictus'a daha sonra bilgisizliği nedeniyle Mincius (zayıf) lakabı verildiği rivayet edilir. Annesi, Nisan 1060'taki duruşmasında hazır bulundu.
